Tokens, tokens everywhere – as far as the eye can see. I’m sure you’ve all seen quite a few played by people. They come out strong and usually make everyone’s night unbearable. I was guilty of this the other night – that’s another story.

However, I got a random pack of Dragons the other day and came across this gem. I neglected to really take a close look at the uncommons and I noticed the Virulent Plague.

Oooh, anti-token – nice if you happen to be playing against someone who only has token decks. And then I thought about Grave Pact and Butcher of Malakir – the wheels started turning on how to best run over tokens and take out everything on the board with them.

This deck will win one of two ways – you will either have enough tokens to exterminate your opponents, making it a standard token deck. Or as I intended, you will create tokens to be eliminated by the Plague and clear a path to victory for all of your big fatties.

Obviously the three components to have are the Plague, the Butcher and any token gen you want. I went with Green and White simply because they are the most efficient at making tokens. Perhaps the most efficient being the Verdant Force. Every upkeep, including your opponents, you will put out a Saproling token that will die and eliminate another roadblock.

Then additives like the Juniper Order Ranger or the Mortician Beetle just get bigger to make it quicker to stomp over. Critters like Blood Artist and enchantments like Sterling Grove just bolster your deck by giving you the multiple win conditions quicker.

And just as an alternative – you could make this Black and Red. Eliminate the ease of the simple token gen with Firecat Blitz – a horde of 1/1 elemental kitties that have haste and go poof at the end of your turn. Of course they will go much quicker with the Plague. But if you throw in something like Goblin Bombardment, you can sac them first for damage and still make all of your opponents’ critters go poof too!

Obviously it’s up to you – Black, Green, White or Black, Red. Either way the plague will have cleared the path to your victory. Let’s just hope that you don’t catch cold yourself!
